Normal	less than 120	and	less than 80
Prehypertension	120–139	or	80–89

High
Stage 1	140–159	or	90–99
Stage 2	160 or higher	or	100 or higher

Blood Pressure Numbers

Optimal blood pressure is less than 120/80 mm Hg.

Hypertension is defined as a systolic blood pressure of 140 mm Hg or greater, or a diastolic blood pressure of 90 mm Hg or greater.

Diastolic Blood Pressure

Diastolic pressure is the pressure of the blood between heartbeats, when the heart is at rest and is refilling.

Systolic Blood Pressure

The systolic pressure is the pressure of blood in the vessels when the heart contracts.
